 SECTION 9820 - Artisan Plaster
(Specifically Italian finishes)

 Part 1 - General
  1. Description and Scope
    1. Section includes
      1. Italian integrally colored veneer plaster applied in areas indicated on drawings.
      2. Related foam/plaster architectural products as required to provide column capitals, crown mouldings, etc. in areas as indicated on drawings.
    2. Related Sections
(Typical: add/delete depending on specific project requirements):
      1. Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS): Section 7240; application and finishing of EIFS substrate.
      2. Lath and Plaster: Section 9200; application and finishing of lath and plaster substrate.
      3. Gypsum Board: Section 9250; application and finishing of gypsum board.
      4. Painting: Section 9900; application of primer and surface sealant.
  2. Description of Finish
    1. Italian plaster is an integrally colored veneer plaster hand troweled in a two-coat process to a thickness of 1/16" to 3/32". It is applied over properly prepared substrates creating a softly mottled appearance with translucent properties to match Architects approved control sample for color and visual texture.
  3. Submittals
    1. Samples: Submit 12" x 12" samples of plaster finish in each required color for approval by Architect.
      1. Samples shall be revised and resubmitted as necessary until an acceptable match to the control sample is achieved.
      2. Approved samples shall be available at the project site for reference by the Contractor and Architect and shall not be removed until acceptance of installation.
  4. Quality Assurance
    1. Material: Italian plasters are supplied to the jobsite (packaged in five gallon containers) wet, colored and ready to be applied.
    2. Installer Qualifications: Application shall be by a company specializing in the application of integrally colored finishes of a scope similar to that required on the Project and acceptable to and approved by distributor specified in Article 2.1 below.
    3. Installer shall extend typical one-year warranty on work performed.
  5. Delivery, Storage & Handling
    1. Deliver materials in original and unopened packages, containers, or bundles with brand names and manufacturer's labels intact and legible.
    2. Store and protect all material from weather and at temperature not less that 40 degrees F.
  6. Project Conditions
    1. Do not install plaster materials when substrate and ambient temperature is below 40 degrees F or above 90 degrees F.
    2. Maintain this temperature range, 24 hours before, during and 48 hours after installation of work.
    3. Provide temporary enclosures, heat and ventilation in areas where work is being performed to allow work to cure.
    4. Restrict traffic from area where coatings are being applied or are curing.
  7. Sequencing and Coordination
    1. Installation of venetian plaster finishes shall be coordinated with installation of gypsum board and other finish materials.
    2. Provide sufficient workers and equipment to ensure a continuous operation, free of cold joints and scaffold lines.

 Part 3 - Execution
  1. Examination
    1. Examine surface to receive plaster for correctness:
      1. Secured grounds, screeds, corner beads, casing beads, plaster stops and accessories.
      2. Grounds set to receive the specified thickness of decorative plaster.
    2. Substrate systems listed below are approved to receive Italian finishes when properly prepared. Verify that highest industry standards have been followed, with the results as follows:
      1. EIFS System (Dryvit Outsulation Plus) completed through base-coat application (Primus or Genesis) troweled to a smooth finish free of defects and irregularities, primed and ready to receive finish coat.
      2. 1-Coat Cementitious Plaster System (LaHabra wall or equal) completed through base coat application, including additional base coat of BTS-B (or equal) troweled to smooth finish free of defects and irregularities, primed and ready to receive finish coat.
      3. Drywall Substrate (5/8" type X) finished to level IV quality smooth finish (suitable for enamel paint) primed and ready to receive finish coat.
    3. Do not proceed with application of plaster until conditions are corrected and acceptable.
    4. Protect adjacent finished surfaces from possible damage during plaster operations prior to application.
  2. Application of Venetian Plaster Finish
    1. Apply (with stainless-steel trowel) initial coat of Italian plaster approximately 1/16" thick over entire surface. Leave surface smooth but "open" and matte in appearance.
    2. Hand trowel finish coat of approximately 1/16" Italian plaster in continuous application over entire plane. Trowel to "hard", smooth finish, dense and reflective in appearance, with visual texture to match control sample.
    3. During application, designated crew shall clean adjacent surfaces and completed finishes of foreign materials resulting from their work.
    4. Inspect completed installation with general contractors project manager to verify that all finishes meet the visual standard established by the control sample, including the accuracy and consistency of the:
      1. Color
      2. Physical Texture
      3. Visual Texture
      4. Surface Sheen
In addition, verify that the highest standards of craftsmanship have been maintained throughout the project particularly in the following areas:
      1. Absence of cold joints, scaffold lines, or other surface effects that interrupt the overall visual balance.
      2. Smooth, clean, tightly troweled surfaces at all corners consistent with the level of quality found in the field portions of the plane.
      3. Crisp and clean transitions where plaster meets dissimilar materials.
    5. Replaster areas that do not meet the standards described above and repair other surfaces that may have been stained, marred or otherwise damaged.
